Gear & Defense
A real winter bag lets you sleep safely in a tent, a snowed-in car or a house with no heat. Outdoor Gear Lab's best overall winter bag, the Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF, is rated to 0°F and combines exceptional warmth with low weight. The NEMO Sonic -20 is nearly as warm for much less money, at the cost of a bit more weight. Temperature ratings are usually survival or lower-limit numbers, so choose a bag rated 10 to 20 degrees colder than you expect. Sleep on an insulated pad, since the ground steals heat faster than air. Keep down dry, store the bag loose rather than compressed, and wear a dry hat and socks to bed.
